The Cynical Traveler Goes To… Harajuku

We’ve all done it. We’ve been sitting there watching the news and there’s been some story on a fashion designer’s latest show. 60 heroin addicts who look like they’ve escaped from Auschwitz appear, sporting fashions that even Barbie dolls have come alive to escape from.
And you sit there wondering, “Who the hell would wear any of this stuff?” Well, wonder no more. All this fashion ends up on the girls in Harajuku.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.”
Yes, Harajuku is the famed fashion capital of Tokyo. This is an honour somewhat akin to the prestige of being named, say “Hillbilly capital of the Southern USA”.
Harajuku is the kind of place that should cause fashion designers to drop Tokyo from their New York, Paris, London, Tokyo collections.
As a picture tells a thousand words, let me now display the horror that is Harajuku. I apologise if the images make your page load slowly, but you should probably consider it a blessing.
I present: Harajuku to Shibuya – An Odyssey in pictures
Our odyssey began at Harajuku station, where we immediately went into freak alert 5. Harajuku is so famous now, that it feels like there are more foreigners with cameras (myself included) than Japanese people. But while many people now consider it a bit passé to make fun of Harajuku fashions, what these people are forgetting is that it’s also incredibly fun.

After 20 mintes or so of shutterbugging around the station, we entered nearby Meiji Park. Meiji Park is an oasis of beautiful trees, stately shrines and majestic temples; and as such, will not be mentioned again in this article.
Anyway, after leaving the park, we skirted its outsides and were lucky enough to run into a troop of Elvis impersonators. These quiffed up fanboys had a stereo booming out Presley hits, while they shuffled on the sidewalk.
Truly awe insipring!

Leaving the Elvises Elivs’s Elvii behind, we headed towards Shibuya, thinking to escape from the madness. No such luck!
The very first road we walked down had some sort of agricultural fair going on. And so, we were greeted by the wonderful sight of a man in a soy bean costume posing for pictures with the locals.

And things got weirder when he was joined by his wife, some kind of wind up, generic, yellow blob.

Finally, they were both joined by the Nutty Professor and the girl pictured three shots below, just in time for all four to perform an incredibly strange dance.

I swear to god, at this stage I wouldn’t have been surprised if George Bush rappelled down from a helicopter, wearing nothing but a leotard and singing “Happiness is a warm gun”!
Further on, we witnessed this mother and her obviously terrified child posing with these scary characters.

And then there was the ANA booth, sponsored by Pikachu.

We’re expecting smooth flying this morning, with a chance of some turbulence and card carrying dragons later this afternoon.
I’d like to now direct your attention to our stewardess, who will demonstrate some basic exercises you can perform to make your flight more comfortable”

Leaving Harajuku, we entered Shibuya passing some interesting shops on the way.

And finally it was into Shibuya station.
However, just to complete my day, I saw a prime example of the subtlety and juxtoposition that make Japanese advertisers the masters of their craft.

Until next time.
Stay cynical,
The Cynical Traveller

ROFL! The domokun (savage poo and flacid condom) caption. Haha. By the way the last picture; is that an ad on a building? I’d love it if crosswalks really were like that.
June 12th, 2005 at 7:58 pm
No such luck, I’m afraid. It’s just a commercial in a shop window. Although, if crossings were really like that, I’m sure you’d get more people helping blind folks across the street.

Harajuku is BOSS. It can beat every other teen hangout in the world with a stick. I was looking to see if any of the kids from my photos showed up in yours, but apparently you had a new crop.
We’ve got to fight the good fight, can’t let harajuku become passe.
Otherwise, what would all those poor kids do on the weekend? It might actually occur to one of them to try one of the really obvious crimes that are just begging to be committed over there… (coming from a U.S. city, my reaction to much of Japan was on the order of “they carry -HOW- much cash in their wallets all the time?”).
June 13th, 2005 at 5:44 pm
Yeah, the crime here is pretty non-existant eh?
That is crimes against individuals.
Some of these girls could be tried for crimes against fashion, and in extreme cases, crimes against humanity.
June 13th, 2005 at 5:52 pm
Good work CT!
Must agree with “C”, loved the caption and I for one will be going out this morning searching for a Savage Poo doll of my own, while I am at it I might just pick up some kind of furry sporran.
Everyone is looking at me strangely in the office as I have been breaking into periodic fits of laughter.
Looking forward to your next hard hitting report.
In other matters, GO YOU CATS!
June 15th, 2005 at 11:08 pm
Well, keep your eyes open Lerdy. There may be a savage poo heading your way.
Oh, and please refrain from making personal comments about awful sporting teams. Go you cats indeed!
June 17th, 2005 at 12:47 pm
re: crime… I was constantly wandering around thinking things like, “Man, shouldn’t someone steal that car? It’s running and everything.”
my next thought was usually, “Oh, yeah, this is why they don’t like foreigners.”
I mean, I don’t even steal cars usually, and I was tempted…

There are crazy-looking people everywhere, not just in Japan. You must have virtually no self esteem whatsoever if you have to make fun of teenagers in a foreign country for the way they LOOK. That seems quite shallow. What do YOU look like? Really though, get a life. We are just out to have a little fun, its not like we’re getting drunk or high or having unprotected sex with strangers in some dark alleyway. We aren’t doing anything wrong and we aren’t harassing anyone, so step off already!
June 19th, 2005 at 8:55 pm
hey, Hino-san…
I hear you about crazy-looking people everywhere; I live near San Francisco, and people try to dress up around here almost as extravagantly, only they’re also doing lots of drugs and most of them could -really- use a shower.
I thought the costumes were awesome, personally. All of the people who commented on my photos thought the same. And actually, I bet Cynical Traveler here thinks so, too, except he’s trying to keep up the “cynical” part of his blog name…
June 19th, 2005 at 9:35 pm
Fair call Hino. Yes, I’m making fun of people who really don’t deserve it, and yes, it’s shallow, but it’s not intended to be nasty. As monkey said, it’s just to fit with the style of the site. None of the stories are indicative of my real opinion.
I went to Harajuku with a Japanese friend and the girls there were really quite accommodating when we asked if we could take their photos.
Some of them are quite cool in their own way but let’s face it, the whole idea behind Harajuku is to be seen.
What do I look like? I look like a foreigner, which is enough to get me pointed at in my small town over here.
June 19th, 2005 at 11:11 pm
I have a feeling Hino-san that The Cynical Traveller is attempting to cover more than his lack of self esteem.
Those boots at the top. I think they might be his!
June 20th, 2005 at 12:54 am
Actually, you’re probably closer to the mark than you’d like to believe Lee.
June 20th, 2005 at 5:49 pm
yeah, Lee called it. C.T. has this fringy western vest with blinking l.e.d.’s that say “I HEART VEGAS”. I’ve seen dogs vomit at the sight of it.
as for me, well, let’s just say I only wear the rocket boots when it’s dark outside…
July 4th, 2005 at 9:20 pm
Hey I’ve seen CT in a frock and it ain’t pretty.
CT and I tend to disagree on most things fashionable so I’ll just say that strangely enough I found some of those girls Eeriely Erotic and I’m sure that I could find a place in my home to chain the whiplash girl to.
July 19th, 2005 at 6:57 pm

原宿が 大好きです。 I went to Japan recently and visited Harajuku a few times. I love it and visited Harajuku a few times. I love it there =P The fashion is so unbelievable.
January 19th, 2006 at 6:22 pm
Personally, I love Harajuku fashion (as I have an odd way of dressing myself…)
But that was uproariously funny.
I about died laughing.
January 20th, 2006 at 2:22 pm
Personally i love harajuku girls. and styles of clothes.
February 19th, 2006 at 7:42 pm

February 26th, 2006 at 10:27 pm
I love Harajuku fashion, personally, and I found many of those clothes particularly wonderful. I’d buy them (if it weren’t for the outrageous pricing ._.;)
But to each his own I suppose ::shrug::
February 26th, 2006 at 10:27 pm
you are horrible! harajuku is wonderful place! >n
March 29th, 2006 at 6:30 pm
I love the harajuku fashion and personally I am offended by this horrorific farticle.
April 12th, 2006 at 7:15 am
Japanese guys with pompadours are so hot.
April 22nd, 2006 at 10:45 pm
I think the Harajuku girls style is crazy alsome, but how did the whole thing start on the Harajuku streets? I wonder do most people make there outfits?
Like the picture with the words yikes written under it. Where on earth did she get that? And how long did it take her to get into it?
May 2nd, 2006 at 1:35 am
ha i love theese kids they are so awesome!!!! i want to dress like that but i wud just like look like a complete freak azoid! speshly since i live in a town in australia!
May 6th, 2006 at 9:59 pm
Hino, Lee, Anna, and anyone else flipping out over this entry:
Chill out, people. Cynical Traveller isn’t being mean-spirited. These girls wanted to be noticed (and express themselves), and it worked. They’ve made in impact on the internet. They’d actually be happy, and they don’t need you to “defend them.”
Let’s use our minds for a moment. Would these girls *honestly* be upset about someone not approving of their clothing? Or even finding it “odd” and snapping pics? The Harajuku scene is about rebellious fashion in a land where lots of people feel pressure to conform. Give these kids some credit. If they were as fragile and spineless as you’re making them out to be, they wouldn’t be on the street wearing this stuff in the first place.
May 9th, 2006 at 7:38 am
Harajuku fashion is not about being weird, colourful spectacles for foreign travellers to laugh at, its about being non-conformist and original. I live in Manchester, in the UK, and some of the kids I see hanging about the shopping centres in the city dress just as radically as Harajuku guys and girls do. This kind of dress code is all over the globe, are we going to make fun of everyone?
May 20th, 2006 at 1:08 pm
uhuu… i like this site!
and i fall in love with the not-a-quiff-pic-guy^^
cheers and greetings from germany
June 7th, 2006 at 3:17 pm
hi,
i loved this site and pic’s. stop slamming cynical, he did what they wanted. took their pictures, paid attention to them and got them even more recognition. it’s all about look at us. they know they are the center of attention when they dress and go there. the place is surrounded by more tourists snapping pictures than actual harajuku girls. they are IT. everyone goes there to see and be seen. it is awesome and fun.
one does wonder though, how many get groped in the overcrowded trains, that groping is a common occurence and a huge problem in japan. great site, i was googling harajuku and came across this (great shots, thanks for sharing). so everyone chill.
June 12th, 2006 at 3:18 pm
heyy
just discovered this site, nice pictures, teh captions were hilarious. but have you ever heard of the word i-n-d-i-v-i-d-u-a-l-i-t-y? No? Well, these teens were showing off a lot of it. Too bad my town isn’t like that. Seems neither are you.
June 21st, 2006 at 7:56 pm
*Snickers* I love it. I think that Harajuku fashion is about the funniest thing in the world, but I’d love to go and buy just one outfit to traipse around in for a day. The shoes frighten me, and at the same time they make me giggle.
And to all of you people complaining at him, c-h-i-l-l. He’s got some pretty valid (and HILARIOUS) opinions. Some of those getups are pretty wild.
July 10th, 2006 at 4:02 pm
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised since the site is called “The Cynical Traveler” lol, but I think the creativity going around in Harajuku is really fantastic. Some of them do it better then others, but either way – why knock it? It’s just a bunch of teenagers doing their thing. Don’t be so uptight
p.s. you don’t seem to enjoy visiting foreign places, so why do you do it? Or do you just like to bitch alot?
July 16th, 2006 at 10:52 am
japan rocks!!! i want to go ther soooooo much!!!!! SUGOIIII!!!!!! xx
July 31st, 2006 at 11:25 pm
hahah the harajuku girls are scary looking but verrryyy cool i went to japan this spring break and managed to catch a glimps of them…. very eclectic fashin sence

“Yeah, the crime here is pretty non-existant eh?

Some of these girls could be tried for crimes against fashion, and in extreme cases, crimes against humanity. ”
WTF
August 20th, 2006 at 8:44 am
I don’t understand that fuss about this article of Harajuku. Yes, it might be extreme in a way, all the fashion and girls there…but the kids will grow out of it sooner or later anyway…I was once a teenager too. Why do you say, people, it’s offending you that someone’s taking a mick of it? If you don’t like it, just don’t read it. Simple as that. It definitely amused me, but even more your arguments!!
August 20th, 2006 at 9:10 pm
Great pictures.
From what I’ve read these girls live at home where all their expenses are paid for and yet work at traditional careers. Therefore their entire paycheck goes towards buying clothing and cutesy accesories. Odd.
August 29th, 2006 at 12:15 pm
Sorry. Skipped to post a comment after reading Hino-sans first remark and ran across a couple similare.
First off, love the pics and subtitles, hilarious. I think I will definatly keep my eye on this site. Love Japan, majoring in japanese actually, anyway.
Secondly, I think a few of the people leaving comments need to look up a few words in a dictionary. Namely, sarcasm, satire, and joke.
Other then that, love the site so far keep it up!
September 6th, 2006 at 10:18 am
hi, great pics! i was randomly googling harajuku fashion and came across this site… your captions really mad me giggle a bit!!
i get why some people are ‘offended’ by what you’ve said about harajuku girls and their fashion but i see it all as light-hearted fun, to be honest…. yeah, you are making fun of them but people who dress so outrageously must realise theyre gunna get a big reaction, i suppose thats why they do it..
personally, i love the way these girls dress, they definately have a LOT of confidence and i think they work the look well =]
xx
September 30th, 2006 at 6:02 am
i personally say we should embrace this culture, they’re making a statement and personaly i think you’ve picked bad photos because I’ve seen more girly doll Harajuku girls like Gwen Stefani’s. Embrace the freak with in you and get with it!!!!!!!!!! lol
October 1st, 2006 at 1:56 pm
Am I the only one noticing that the people here who cannot spell…. are all Harajuku lovers? Hm…
October 4th, 2006 at 11:13 pm
That was pretty funny! Lol, thanks for the pick me up, I needed that.
October 18th, 2006 at 7:18 am
Isn’t Harashmuku annoying? To dish people because of their spelling? That’s low.
I really love GIRLS Harajuku style, but I couldn’t picture myself wearing it. I don’t like the Elvis hair, it grosses me out (It’s MY opinion)
Everyone should spice their wardrobe up a little. There’s too many people who always wear plain t-shirt, jeans and converse. Sounds familiar?
I’m not telling you to go Harajuku, we just need to be more personal. Plain jeans, t-shirt and converse does NOT tell anything about you, exept your and average, boring type! Step up!!
October 23rd, 2006 at 4:15 am
What a crazy stuff! We do not have things like that in Germany- it’s AMAZING!
I like it!
October 26th, 2006 at 3:19 am
too bad this review is heavily biased in cynicism and lack of creativity giving human expression a bad name…. quite the contrary from the Harajuku!
November 8th, 2006 at 7:19 pm
love the images!! ^_^
November 9th, 2006 at 10:11 am
Personally i think this was amusing……yes i agree that harajuku is pretty amazing but (refering to pervious comments) why knonk this guy they’re just doing their thing and if you don’t like go else where….it was to be funny…not to bring down a friggen nation. Get real.
p.s. please continue things like this its funny
November 9th, 2006 at 3:27 pm
read this thing on them being brainwashed(gwen stefanis ones) and they look soooo boring compared to thse ones, theylook well gd! we shud have clothes lyk this in england. i thinkkkkk id die. x

March 8th, 2007 at 5:12 pm
Harajuku District …… I love the scene the clothes the style these guys have. It is unique and creative and imagination is the key here. I understand it may appear odd or disturbing to some but hey its better than spending time doing way worse things. Lets applaud them for there gift at creating something wonderous and eye catching.
March 20th, 2007 at 11:35 pm
it looks so great to be able to visit harajuku and see all those things by ur own eyes.
April 8th, 2007 at 6:32 am
Hey there.. Well i read this and i say, Good article. Its your opinion and your alowed to it as you see fit. I’m actually in Japan now. Me and a friend are on vacation.
We were at Harajuku yesterday (SAT) and actuall met two girls who are there almost every weekend mostly sundays though. which is the big day to go to Harajuku. We hung out with them on the bridge SAT and then met up with them again SUN and hung out with them.
We saw everything that goes into getting ready and shopping for costumes and everthing that goes into a SUN at Harajuku. Its a great experience. anyone who coms to Japan NEEDS to see Harajuku, the girls are amazing.

Ah, Harajuku girl are amazing! It’s terrible that a man who doesn’t understand that sub culture have the chance to visit japan while I’m sitting in my room hoping to do that since i was 9!!!!!!! but, i know, the worls it’s cruel…so, a day, I will be there, playing cospla’ with other girls and, maybe, meet a boy like miyabi…

June 25th, 2007 at 5:30 pm
Yes, Japanese men in pompadours are SMMMMMOKIN’! To be specific, though, those are ducktail quiffs.
I am personally rather a fan of the various fashions visible in Harajuku, and have spent about a week there myself. However, I’d like to put all this into perspective by pointing out some of the different styles we’re seeing here all mashed up under the title “Harajuku fashion”:
-Lolita, a childish, frilly style bathed in old-fashioned girlish excess. Typified by knee-length, lace-covered dresses with tons of petticoats and a headpiece (French bonnet) to accompany it. Mary Janes are the regular shoe of choice. The most popular sub-style is gothic lolita, typified by black dresses with white lace, and a general sense of dark cuteness; this is taken to its furthest with kurololi (black loli), which is all black, and includes things such as coffin purses and even black makeup – makeup being something not normally worn by lolis. Other sub-styles include country lolita (think Strawberry Shortcake), punk lolita, classic lolita (more reserved and classier), and erololi (“erotic” loli – short or no sleeves, low necklines, shorter skirts).
-Goth, a fashion (or range of fashions, rather) of Western origin not to be confused with gothic lolita or kurololita.
-Decora, which is essentially a rainbow-colored explosion of hyper, childish excess. The name is from “decoration,” which speaks to the style’s proclivity for covering the wearer with brightly-colored decorations and accessories from head to toe. A typical decora-chan might wear layers of petticoats with a blindingly bright skirt, a gingham top, a neon green or pink button-up sweater hand-decorated by multicolored puffballs, a Barbie backpack, three or four small fashion purses featuring Hello Kitty, Charmmy Kitty, Gloomy Bear, or any of a billion other cute characters, pink and green hair with straight bangs and pigtails, streamers and puffballs adorning the hair, bright pink glasses with a glasses chain of rainbow-colored plastic “candy” beads, giant cyber-ish platform shoes, and perhaps as much as 50 to 100 brightly-colored plastic bracelets. Cute stickers are also common, on the accessories, cell phones, hands, and even the face.
-Cyber, a fashion of European origin not to be confused with decora (though it can at times look quite similar). This is often combined with goth, to create a unique dark futuristic blend known as cybergoth.
-Cosplay, the practice of making costumes of one’s favorite characters, musicians and so-on, and wearing them out to public gatherings and areas to be admired. This is not so much a fashion as it is a hobby. Many of the people sporting “bizarre fashions” in Harajuku and posing for photos are actually cosplayers.
-Visual kei (“visual style”), a movement in Japanese rock music that consists of bands wearing intricate and often bizarre costumes. There are a number of distinct styles of VK clothing, but they tend not to be genrefied, and the music is stylistically quite diverse. Many, but not all, of the bands and costumes can be characterized as dark. VK bands do of course inspire many fans to wear clothing inspired by their costume style, and visual kei is a common inspiration for cosplay as well. The most commonly cosplayed band in Harajuku is usually Dir en grey.
-Punk. The punk style in Japan is very much “fashion punk,” and is very different from the traditional punk clothing, which is primarily concerned with cultural identification and a sense of being at odds with the mainstream. Most punk bands in Japan are pop-punk, and Japanese punk clothing is more concerned with a creative fashion statement, and even a sense of trendiness, than any sort of political or even musical affiliations. The most marked difference is that Japanese punk clothing has many popular brands, and the brands tend to brand-label their clothing in prominent locations. A “real” Western punk would never be caught dead in brand-label clothing.
There are many Japanese street-fashionistas who attempt a blend of styles, or simply make up their own, much to their credit. Of course, the above is by no means a complete list.
Cheers!

Japanese street fashion is irresistibly incredible!! I love it!
July 11th, 2007 at 8:53 pm
Well, dear cats, the name of the segment is “The CYNICAL Traveler…” So no bashing the author =] But yea, I love Harajuku fashion, though I’d never buy anything for myself (prices AND I don’t really go outside..). The captions in the article were hilarious, I have to admit, and I had a good laugh reading them. Go VK, and go cats! ^_^”
August 15th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
Visual Kei,Harajuku fashion,Agura, whatever the kids are calling it these days LOL is about the only thing on Earth that hasn’t been over done by everyone in the mass media! Now don’t get me wrong! It is with out a doubt in the media, but like true Goth,Industrial,or Cyber Punk, This style hits a very specified group, & it’s not overly likely that fans of The Candy Spooky Theater,or Schwarz Stein, are fans of 50 cent,Fall Out Boy or any shitty pop icons that America has now become famous for mass producing!! REMEMBER KIDS! IT’S ONLY AWESOME UNTIL THE WHOLE WORLD KNOWS ABOUT IT! On a side not though. Domo aregato Nephon!!!

I know its your right to take the piss out of people if you want to , what i dont understand is you saying its a crime against shion , this IS fashion, its the same as the punk idea in briatain, it doesnt matter if its good or bad, what matters is its there, and is a tardemark type of cluture, where do yuo think big desighners get thyre ideas from, lots of the stuff you see in magazines aint a far from what these kids wear, i think its great people having the audacity to wear this stuff, beacuse who else is going to give future generations of fashion desighners they’re ideas? they come form somewhere, and this is as good a place as any. its a hell of a lot more creative than most of the stuff we see everywhere else- XX

September 28th, 2007 at 12:33 am
Haha… Crazy Japanese!
October 1st, 2007 at 5:48 am
Duuuude,
It’s people like you who ruin good things
The individuality that the Harajuku kids have is amazing.
Anyone who looks down on expression through appearance should be put to death.
October 7th, 2007 at 3:40 pm
This is very offensive to me because i am japanese and lived there for 2 years, therefore i know that not every one dresses like that. There are plenty of preps in japan.
p.s. next time do a little research before you blog!
October 20th, 2007 at 6:21 pm
Well I would just like to say that I find this sorts of fashion very appealing….seriously…anyway what exactly does Harajuku mean???
November 8th, 2007 at 2:47 pm
Well Im a little late to the party but it was amusing to see all the comments left behind. Lighten up ppl
It’s just a blog, it doesnt have to be PC. Do research before blogging? You do research if you want lexxi and write what you want on ur own blog
Thanks for all the awesome pics mister! and as the webpage is “cynical travel” yah…we shud expect cynicism here? hardly worth getting upset about.

i love Harajuku . it’s one of places where you can wear anything you want and (most) people wouldn’t look at you like you were a freak xD and thanks to you guys who really know what Harajuku is… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harajuku
